8/14/2010Report by Sean Hughes on 50-Mile Bike Hike for Communications Merit Badge
The C&O Canal is a wonderful area to go for a long bike ride. Last May we took a trip to this place full of natural as well as man-made beauty. However before we took to the road and the thirty-five miles that lay ahead of us we had some preparing to do as well as some requirements for the biking merit badge that needed to be done. First we took a trip to the Downingtown Bike Shop in February. Mr. Van Gilder (the owner) was more then happy to help show us how to inspect our bike for safety and repair tires. I personally also bought a bike from them to replace my beaten and used one. He also supplied us with tools that may be necessary for our trip. If we used them we would pay for them; if not, we could return them at the end of our trip at no cost. The big trip we were planning was long so the planning committee consisting of Andy Wells, Tommy Wells, Adam Tidball, Jimmy Heiden and myself decided to plan two smaller trips before going to the C&O canal just to get ready. The first was to Struble Trails in March. Troop 6 has done previous shakedowns here as well as taken rides for fun. It was to be a simple ten miles to get ready and get a feel for our bikes if they haven’t been used in a wile or are new. Everything went well except the bike tools got left in the cars so when an unfortunate scout had his bike seat fall off it was quite an ordeal to repair on the trail. Next we had to prepare for the bike safety meeting in April to talk up the trips and get some others on board with the merit badge. The meeting went well. We had the scouts learn how to inspect their bikes and the proper safety of riding one. Some kids brought in their bikes and did some requirements there. Now we had the trip to Wildwood to look forward to. A large number of people were planning on going to this trip. We would bike 25 miles around the town then have some good old fashioned fun on the beach afterwards. Unfortunately this trip was rained out and is now being planned for this September post C&O. The committee met one more time before the trip. The meeting was a bonfire that took place in my backyard. We had some dinner and relaxed a bit then got down to the business of plotting out our course. We camped at the Harpers Ferry Youth Hostel which was a 15 minute drive from the point where the biking would commence. We set off along the canal for a ways before going along a street to do some biking through the Antietam Battlefield which is now an historic area. There was a lot of beautiful scenery and old buildings from civil war era. After biking through this we hit the canal again to finish it off before the rains came to stop our ride for us. All along this ride we had two cars following behind, specifically along roads, to pick up people who got too tired and to provide some safety from crazy drivers who may not see us. Only Zach Ratliff and I got picked up. I had back problems and Zach was using a one gear bike so got tuckered out early on. Throughout this trip we acquired many requirements necessary to earn biking merit badge. The trip itself was a requirement. Different trips consisting of different lengths in miles to be biked are the biggest ones you need to earn. Besides biking however we had a meal never before attempted by Troop 6 BSA…chicken parmigiana. We cooked the chicken over the fire and put the cheese and sauce on them. It was amazing. That night as is typical for Troop 6 we enjoyed our great peach cobbler dessert. The cobbler is also cooked in Dutch Ovens in the fire. We had great food, good company, and an even better memory of a beautiful river and old battle ground that was seen through the eyes of scouts biking along. Written By: Sean Hughes

10/14/2009SAVE THE DATE!
West Chester Troop 6 will be commemorating its 100th anniversary with an event on Saturday, October 9. There will be a ceremony in the Meeting Room of West Chester Friends, the Troop''s charter organization, at 3:00 p.m., followed by a reception at the Chester County Historical Society. All past and present Troop 6 Scouts and leaders and their families are welcome!

10/27/2008Adult Volunteers
Adult volunteers, uniformed and non-uniformed, are always needed on Troop 6 outings. At a minimum, a Troop outing must have one uniformed leader and another adult to meet BSA Youth Protection Guidelines. The Committee is asking for your help so that the Troop has sufficient adult leadership at each scheduled outing to ensure proper coverage and so that no outing needs to be cancelled for lack of adult attendance. A sign up form is available under the Troop Committee section. Please print it, fill it out and return it to the Committee at your earliest convenience. Thank you for your support.
